Ben Haberfield

I did a degree in fine art at Kingston university in 1991. I thought I was going to art school to learn the craft of painting, instead they just tried to teach me how to blag about my ideas and my art. I was expected to hang unfinished pieces of art on the wall in front of the rest of the students and justify why I was making that painting and what it meant. I found this extremely pointless, and a waste of time. What is it all about? "I dont know" I would say, I try not to think too much and just let it flow. Why did I use so much red? Because I had run out of blue. My art talks to me, it reveals itself to me over a course of time. I spend hours just staring at my work, far more time than I actually spend creating it. I have always been interested in cultural arts, there was no need to explain, their art was functional, tribal war shields painted with scary faces to scare off the enemy, face paint to make ones self more beautiful, paintings depicting history, mythology or visions of the spirit. After art school I worked on a few commissions before leaving England to roam the world for 10 years. I studied the arts and spirituality of many different cultures, then I became fascinated in sacred geometry and power symbols. I am now based back in London, where I am working designing and building gardens for a London based landscape gardening company called Cercis. I still travel as often as possible, and continue to create in many forms.
